HortEast 2010 - November 22-24, 2010

HortEast has come to a close for 2010 - this three-day event is always a highlight for industry members from Atlantic Canada, and this years show did not disappoint!

Workshops were offered on Monday for Landscape Construction and Maintenance companies, addressing cutting edge industry issues including permeable pavers and hardscape design, pesticide free turf grass management, and advanced landscape maintenance techniques.  An industry tour visited the new exterior living wall, green roof, and interior living walls at the Nova Scotia Community College, the brand new Halifax Farmers Market, along with other sites of interest in Nova Scotia.  Monday evening ended with a well attended reception at the Westin Nova Scotian Hotel which was a great chance to connect with speakers, exhibitors, sponsors and delegates before HortEast kicked off on Tuesday morning.

The trade show and conference on Tuesday and Wednesday included over 100 booths from Canadian and US exhibitors, a Happy Hour on the trade show floor, a new Passport Program, and a number of seminars that motivated and educated delegates from speakers including Tim Brennan, Liz Klose, Sue Sirrs, Tim Amos, Robert Bowers, Jerry Gorchels, Eric Lyons, and Jeff McMann.

The HortEast committee is made up of volunteer representatives from Landscape New Brunswick, Landscape Nova Scotia, and Landscape Newfoundland and Labrador with staff support from the CNLA office in Milton, ON.  The committee consisted of Scott Mosher (Chair) and Paul MacPhee with Landscape Nova Scotia, Kevin Nauss and John Evans with Landscape New Brunswick, and Jeanette French with Landscape Newfoundland and Labrador.  Rebecca Doutre coordinated the show from the CNLA office with support from CNLA staff member Michelle Brown, with additional help from CNLA staff for bookkeeping and graphic design work.  Assistance was also received from Jim Landry, staff with Landscape New Brunswick, and Pam Woodman and Tracey Gilbert, staff of Landscape Nova Scotia.

HortEast would like to thank our generous sponsors for their support of our show including Shaw Brick, Plant Health Atlantic, Oaks Concrete Products, Atlantic CAT, Permacon, CNLA, Nova Tree, Ball, PanAmerican Seed, Sheridan Nurseries, Envirem Organics, Downham Nurseries, Plant Products, Willowbrook Nurseries, Mori Nurseries, and Chase Paymentech, as well as the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture for providing funding for our speaker program.

The dates for the 2011 show have been set for November 21st for pre-show events and exhibitor set-up, and November 22nd—23rd for the trade show and conference.

For more information on HortEast please visit www.horteast.ns.ca or contact Rebecca Doutre at 1-866-383-4711, or email rebecca@canadanursery.com.

LNB 2010 Annual General Meeting

Landscape NB held it’s Annual general meeting in Moncton on Tuesday December 7th. The weather as usual played a factor, although not so much the little bit of snow that accumulated, but rather the forecast that predicted much worse. Nonetheless, people from far and away traveled to the Hotel Moncton and huddled around the warm glow of the projector to learn about all of our activities of the past year, and to sit in amazement of what’s to come.

2010 AGM

The primary focus this year seems to be on the newly designated apprenticeship program for the Landscape Horticulture Trade. LNB has begun by registering the Landscape Horticulture Training Institute and it is through that agency that we will deliver the block one classroom training beginning Jan 31. The board is asking everyone who can qualify as a journeyperson to get involved with the program. On that note, I can say that we had the person who holds the ranking of the first LH tradesman in the room with us. Jeff Lamrock from Ernies Landscaping was first off the mark.

We spoke of certification and how the most impressive regional testing of 50 candidates occurred in Truro this spring. Our winter training program is receiving its final coat of varnish, before it becomes unleashed on the masses before Christmas. This includes more wall and paver training, our 2 day All Commodity Education Sessions (ACES), the IPM symposium, as well as all of courses to support the Landscape Industry Certification program. We do indeed have a full slate of learning opportunities for employers and workers alike. (I’m not suggesting employers don’t work, rather just making a distinction)

The membership of LNB is very fortunate to have 4 new recruits on the board. We accepted Ben Scholten, Joe Wynberg, Dave Milburn and Karen Carrier at the meeting as new directors. Also, we have a new president to replace John Evans. John has served our industry very well over the past 2 years at the helm, and has turned the ship over to Neil Pond in seaworthy shape. But as association life travels it’s predetermined path, and John assumes the chair of past president, then the current past president must relinquish his spot and move away from the table. Kevin Nauss has spent most of his adult life with LNB, and now he’s moving on. We considered retiring his sweater, but it’s pretty moth-eaten anyway.
